Got an email from my dad today congratulating me on an anniversary.  10 years ago today I, along with an amazingly dedicated team of people, completed my Eagle Scout service project at Whitter Narrows Nature Center in Whitter, CA.  Aside from the months of planning, promoting the event, creating a business plan and coordinating everything with dad, we spent a weekend of service to the Nature Trail helping to recover from the aftermath that El Nino brought on shorty before.  With all the rain and odd conditions that came with the storm, the nature trail which was a destination for bird watchers, school filed trips, and nature lovers was almost unbearable.  Together we cleaned up the overgrowth on the trail, repaired and painted all the signs along the way, marked off areas to stay away from and help to point out the best parts for the first time visiter. It was no easy task, but man did it feel great in the end.

Whitter Narrows Nature Walk

All the little dirt trails you see here we went through with weed-wackers, lawnmowers and machetes to dump the overgrowth with.  It was a whole lot of work and I couldn’t have done it, or even planned it as well as i did without the support of my parents.

To think back on how much being in scouting helps you grow as a 16/17year old making all these plans, dealing with adults three times my age and just doing good in general, it really prepares you for life and helps you appreciate that there is some good that can be done in the world. I was only 16 when I started planning this.  To think of how much I’ve accomplished since then, a large majority of it I can thank the expierences of scouting for, and I’m proud to say it.

One of my best friends Adam is probably the only one who helped out then that sees my blog from time to time and was my partner in crime for our whole scouting career.  Whenever you see this post man, thank you again, I seriously couldn’t have done this without your help. Your anniversary is coming up soon too, we need to get a beer.
