A New Week Brings Rain

Who was it that said it never rains in Southern California? Don’t know about never, but once in a while we get a solid half inch or so. It was a nice treat to wake up to rain this morning, we haven’t had any in quite a long while. Far from 30 Day’s of Rain, but it’s a start even though ForecastFox tells me tomorrow will be partly sunny.

Over the last month I’ve sort of been in a creative rut but I’m ready to pick back up now and hopefully be a bit more confident once the holidays pass. Mom and dad are buying me a new Point & Shoot camera for Christmas which I get to pick-out and grab myself. I know, I know, but my excuse was that I wanted to use it for Christmas.. slick huh?

I had intentions of posting a lot more then the last five or six, but going through my lists and bookmarks helped me realize it’s not always about being so sold on one persons style and how it affects you all at once, but more of taking the time out of your day to find what inspires you in full. Like browsing 10 or 20 new portfolio sites over a few days and letting your day-to-day experiences affect your perception. For example, I was sick at home over the past holiday weekend, no fun. But it gave me a chance to enjoy some HDTV. So I caught up on a lot I missed and watched the entire fourth season of Family Guy which was a joy. When I was flippin around I thought I’d watch the MTV Europe VMA’s. Dude, what an amazing production. If you havn’t seen that in HD you’re missing out. But they did this awesome neon-light R/G/B cut sequence in-between acts that got me thinking about another way of presenting my work. Instantly I jumped online and registered two new domains while the idea was fresh. colorseperation.com and seperatingcolor.com. Don’t laugh at me, that’s just how I work.

In anycase, I’m looking to add a few more things to this site, just need to find some time to code and test it out. Keep checking back or grab the feed if you prefer RSS.. have a great holiday season.

Photographer: Learning To See

Michael Czeiszperger has a wonderful eye for the detail of life, and as his aptly named photoblog explains, this site is his process of pulling the special moments out of life to give the viewer a chance to not only relate and “get the picture”, but recall their own similar experiences and memories. Michael explains how all of his photos are untitled:

The main reason for that is I want each viewer to have the opportunity to react in their own way without being told how to feel. Adding a title becomes a game where the viewer glances at an image, reads the title, and then tries to “get it”, as if the picture is a test question with only one answer. For example, if you look at a picture of a boy crying, imagine the changes in your response if the title was “Dropped Candy” vs. “Grandparent Died”. In both cases the image is exactly the same, but our reactions and emotions are not. The logical extension of having a title is adding a narrative, which is the purview of photojournalism. There is an art to telling a story with pictures, but that is the opposite of what I do. My goal is to have each picture survive on its own visual merits without having to rely on any one context.

I really like that thinking he put into his photos, here are a few of my favorites from one of his galleries.

Photographer: Chromasia

The photos at Chromasia are just awesome. David J. Nightingale has a beautiful sense for color, isolation, portraiture, the obvious and the never considered. Some of my absolute favorite children’s portraits come from behind his lense, and I get a lot of inspiration for depth, attitude and placement from his work.

Here is one of his most recent, but still a favorite which I think captures his style completely:

Photographer: Solea

Solea has a very sweet style. She’s her own favorite model and loves self-portraits in the strangest of light and surroundings. Solea’s shots always have a certain ghostly and curious feeling to them, her use of light bleed and color make for a surprising shot. I really enjoy viewing her favs and she has some great collections of her work. Here are a few of my favorites of her favorites:

Photographer: Sam Javanrouh

Sam Javanrouh runs the extremely successful photoblog site slickly-named “Daily Dose of Imagery” @ topleftpixel.com. Sam’s eye for the obviously hidden wonders this world has to offer are awesome and exciting. I enjoy viewing a photo of sam’s every day as he’s not only a world traveler, but a city traveler. He explores his city, finds the good and the bad in every alley-way, building-scape and light fixture.

I really like watching what he comes up with from day to day. It’s been a goal of mine to take enough pictures to post one I’m happy with per week, but I have much respect for those who find the time every day of the year to show off jems like he does. Check out some of his work, grab the feed & enjoy.

Photographer: Kathleen Connally

Every other morning or so, I love taking A Walk Through the Durham Township. Kathleen takes me on a journey with every shot she snaps. Life seems wonderful behind her lens. The vibrant colors of the country, the simple portraits of those closest to her and the strangers she meets, and the ambiance she captures is one in a million. I very much enjoy her work, she’s been recognized and awarded for her talents, and I am an avid fan of waiting to see what comes next. Some of my favs of her favs below:

Photographer: Houser

What better way to start off a new series of props through inspiration then with a buddy of mine: Houser.

I met Houser online years ago through a friends site and over the years we exchanged a few notes and such back and fourth. I had just started getting into photography on more of a serious level and he started in real heavy. Every since I’ve been nothing short of impressed by his work. Watching his style grow and mature has been nothing short of a treat, and hes a great guy to top it off. Here are some of his favorites:
