Phaidon Design Classics

Amazon.com: Phaidon Design Classics (3 Volume Set)

Phaidon PressI have to admit, this is a pretty sweet collection if you don’t count the random packaging. 1,000 pages of details on design. Everything from the classic scissor to Toblerone is in here. For the [Amazon] price, I suppose it’s not that bad. Maybe I’ll find a used copy on eBay in a few months.

From cars to furniture, from tableware to cameras, from everyday objects to airplanes, this breadth of design has never before been collected in such a way before. PHAIDON DESIGN CLASSICS tells the story of design’s evolution around the world from the late 1600’s to the present, bringing together patents, prototypes, old advertisements, original drawings, images showing the process of manufacturing, as well as rare archival photographs. The anthology features an astonishing 4,000 images.

The objects are presented chronologically, beginning with an elegant pair of Chinese bonsai scissors from the early 1600s, still in production today, and ending with Barber Osgerby’s Lunar bath accessories, destined to become a classic. Glancing through the volumes, the reader will gain an understanding not only of the history of design, but a history of taste and culture. The book is an extraordinary journey through the objects that have shaped our society, from the first attempts to combine function and beauty in the nineteenth century, through the machine aesthetics of the thirties, the advent of plastic and other new materials in the fifties and sixties, up to the classics-to-be of the last ten years.

The book includes not only objects created by internationally renowned designers, such as Breuer, Le Corbusier, Dreyfuss, Eames, Yanagi and Castiglioni, but also anonymously designed pieces, such as the clothes peg, the corkscrew and the chopstick, which, in spite of lacking a specific designer, have achieved such perfection in design and functionality that they have eliminated the possibility of improvement.

I’m all about looking for inspiration where I can find it. This collection really brings it together for you.

Lost vs. Idol

Talk about a night of must see tv.. The final episodes of Lost on ABC & American Idol on FOX. Crazy matchup.. almost as close as 24, Alias & The Clippers game on Monday. Well, hey, I’m happy to say I probably won’t be watching either. I’m all about refreshing news.google at 10:01pm tonight and seeing all the headlines fill up with who won. Is it the hottie or the Clooney look-alike? sofar dialidol predicts our favorite grey-hair’d friend. Which actually is a pretty good deal, or at least put the way my friend mentiond it to me, If the hottie falls in second, the depression factor may get her a magazine spread sooner. haha.

I’m still bummed Barbara Tucker’s niece got kicked off.. That was awesome when she showed up in the auditions, I was hoping she would spit out a few bars.

UPDATE: Ha, I knew it.

That’s Some Hard Candy

Hard CandyYea, saw this flick with Anthony and Chris & his girl tonight in Huntington. Craaaaaaazy movie man. The trailer looked awesome but wow, what an intense movie. It’s about this model photographer with a conviction for young girls.. in a bad way. Meets this chick online and she turns out to be more then just crazy and twisted, she was really just playing him all along. Sweet flick man. I was bummed we didn’t get more photography out of it but hey, Sundance awards don’t lie.

Speaking of flicks.. forgot to mention I’m back on the Netflix kick. I want to use it to catch-up on my season/series that I missed or jumped in on too late.. like The Sporanos for example. I don’t really feel like paying $500 for the complete set on Amazon, but I’d be happy to rent them 2 at a time and watch them as I go. Also Anthony I’m counting on you to suggest some solid Kung Fu movies my way as you find em.

Couple of sweet links for your Tuesday Night:

24: Season In Review

Well as a loyal watcher since Season I.. a dedicated viewer even when it was on Sunday Nights, an annoying fan that would talk and talk about this show untill people either shut me up or gave in to listen, my only comments about this season…? DAMN!

Jack Bauer

I swear man, just when you thought Jack couldn’t do anything better, more devious or insane.. he defeats nerve gas, infultrates and demolishes a gas company, takes his old boss as hostage and shoots his wife, commendeer’s a plane of dignitaries, ambushes a military submarine & interrogates the President of the US. All in a day too I might add. And it’s funny, as the ending cretist rolled away, I kept thinking how in the life of Jack, he woke up at that one chicks place in the mountains and was about to have breakfast. Haha, ahh the joys of viral television.

Now I have to wait a freaking half year for January 2007 for next season. Damn you FOX. But this season gave me new reason to watch the old ones again and prepare for what they’re going to do to the US with Jack as a hostage. I knew that dude would be back, I just didn’t know when. I do want to know who Jack want’s to call tho..

Here’s to Season 6, yo.

How to Eat a Watermellon

Like Sandeep told me earlier tonight, to think we’ve been doing it wrong this whole time amazes me.. I mean just listen to this guy.. I think he knows what he’s talking about.

In this clip from civil rights activist Petey Greene’s Washington DC television program in the 70s, Greene explains how to eat watermelon. Utterly bizarre. Also, pointers on eating corn and fried chicken.

Believe me, it gets good after a minute or so. Just remember, “I got it off the vine, it’s sweet like honey and I’ll plug it all the time.” heh

Dear NSA…

Dear NSAThis is genious

Q: My wife suggested that I get this new haircut, how does it look?
A: It’s fine — but what’s up with the pedicure?

Q: Where’s Waldo?
A: We’re still looking, but you can trust that we’re following up on many excellent leads.

Q: I’m interviewing with AT&T, can you put in a good word for me?
A: Already taken care of.

Q: Where did I leave my keys?
A: Inside pocket of your gray jacket (it’s hanging in the front closet).
