So after going though HELL with B&H photo/video trying to get this order (never ordering from those morons again), I went on amazon today and took care of it, ended up being cheaper anyways. Can’t wait to get this puppy already!

Aww yea, it’s that time again. The webby awards are back for the 10th annual nomination round. If it was anything like last year this should be hella good going in to 2006, thats for sure.

One thing that really shows how much the web has evolved in just a year in popularity of the Web 2.0 generation on the rise is the new categories they have for submissions & awards.

This years’ awards marks the debut of seven (7) new categories: Business Blog, Political Blog, and Personal/Cultural Blog; the first-ever category honoring Podcast Sites; Corporate Communications; and two new visual design categories, Best Visual Design - Aesthetic, and Best Visual Design - Function.

With the public increasingly turning to the web for video coverage of major events, from Hurricane Katrina to the Live 8 concerts, we’ve also added a special category for Best Use of Video or Moving Images.

Pretty sweet, can’t wait to check out the line up, I hope we submit at work.

I spend hours coding, testing, tweaking, pixel-pushing, slicing, dicing, manipulating, promoting and double checking a site.. it goes down. Thats right I’m talking to you Flickr. I spent a month working on my damn photoblog site I launched Sunday night, yesterday their site was down for 3 hours and right now it’s timing out again. *shrug* I give up.

I was listening to NPR today and heard them talking about a topic that always spparks the interest of this geeky whiteboy, Space. you know. the final frontier. *heh*

it was pretty interesting how they started to explain about nasa’s plans in what they’re aiming to build. but holy shit 2018!? I guess all I can say is im glad I grew up as a kid with operable shuttles I could be excited about, not some funky look’n prototype that looks like a cylinder with antennas and ganas hanging trom it. In anycase it’ll be much safer, more reliable and best part of all, capable of taking mankind to Mars. Now that’s something I can only dream of being alive on this earth to witness!

NPR : NASA Unveils Plans for Shuttle Replacement

NASA releases plans for a new spacecraft that would replace the space shuttle. The vehicle is part of a system that will be capable of putting astronauts on the moon by 2018, laying the groundwork for space travel to Mars. NASA says the new system is designed to be 10 times safer than the space shuttle.

So on top of the launch of my new design (was feelin my Irish bleed through the other night and figured what the hell), my Photo-blog is now live!

Thats right, finally done and live!

I had fun with this version. The entire site is built using the Flickr API. I wrote the site on one file that writes the basic html and included a file that runs all the function calls. Currently I am using curl to make the data calls, caching the response locally and parsing the XML to build the site that refreshes every 10 minutes for updates. I figured this might come in handy when traffic gets high, but the more I think about it I’ll probably re-write the dammed thing all using a new Class I found called PHP Flickr written very well. Currently using it to generate the RSS feed and it works like a charm, so we’ll see.
