News Corp. on Monday said it has agreed to acquire Intermix Media Inc., which owns more than 30 e-commerce and media websites, for $580 million in cash, tripling News Corp.’s reach among U.S. Internet users and making it a player in the online social-networking market.

In a separate deal, Intermix announced on Monday that it has acquired the 47 percent of social networking site MySpace.com that it didn’t already own.

In the News Corp. agreement, the Los Angeles based media giant would pay $12 per common share of Intermix stock, or about $580 million. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter, pending approval of Intermix stockholders.

MySpace.com and Intermix’s other sites would become a part of the acquiring company’s newly formed Fox Interactive Media unit, led by Ross Levinsohn. Intermix chief executive Richard Rosenblatt and MySpace chief executive Chris DeWolfe would continue in their roles under Levinsohn.

“Intermix’s brands, such as MySpace.com, are some of the web’s hottest properties and resonate with the same audiences that are most attracted to Fox’s news, sports and entertainment offerings,” Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corp., said in a statement. “We see a great opportunity to combine the popularity of Intermix’s sites, particularly MySpace, with our existing online assets to provide a richer experience for today’s Internet users.”

Wow, can honestly say I didn’t see this coming, but all i hope is they finally put some regulations on this spam portal - also know as myspace. It’s turning into such a craze.. I remember way back when I was talking to the guys and we asked “you get her number?”, later that progressed to “you get her email?”.. followed by the ever so popular “you get her screen name?” and now.. the lovley “is she on myspace?”.

I’m not hating on my friends that have it. Hell I have an account too but I think i’ve logged in twice. Deep down there’s nothing wrong with it, just like friendster and all the others, but when it’s so inundated with adspace, pointless pages and things like “you have 632,932 friends in your extended network”, you have to admit, no one really cares.

One thing I did like was how they integrated RSS feeds into the profile and you could create your own blog, but that always bring back the point where if you give someone too much power over their “domain” they abuse the hell out of it. I know i’m just talking like a stingy & web-critical bitch here, but when you can’t read the text on the page because theres a picture of you and your best friends drunk as the background with white text.. you need to agree that there’s nothing productive about that at all.

Then you have the case of me where I reverted back to the default template for my blog, yea, i know it’s lame but that’s jsut because I’m too lazy.. at least this site validates. If I could get my damned internet to work at my apartment maybe i’d do something about it already! .. im not bitter.
