Goodbye Athens, Welcome China

So I have to say, i just finished watching the closing ceremony and I admit it, I loved it. A few times I amost got a tear out because of the amazing footage and the way they compiled victories, defeats, pride and joy these amazing athletes showed for the past two weeks. I think this is the first olympics that I really havn’t taken for granted in my life, I’ve been busy, but when i got the chance to sit down and watch a few of the games, i just remember thinking *wow*. To watch the best in the world all compete together and give this every effort they have, it really makes you appreciate the millions of talents we all share and how someone can give their all for not only themself, but their country & home.

Listening to the news reporter they mentioned that in a country where only 11Million people live, spending > 8BILLION on these games was almost unheard of, and greece is more than in debt from hosting the 04 Olympics. But the fact that they used this a chance to better their country, new subways, freeways, cell phone service goes to show that the world still is moving forward even in places that can’t afford it . Countries are willing to take those risks that they all fear for to show that they can live up to the US, UK, Asia etc when it comes to the big-boy’s game. I think it’s just awesome that we brought the olympics home to where they originated, and to think of just how much we - as a world - have advanced since the old’en days of shotput and sprinting, it kinda makes you smile in a surreal way and appreciate pride in a whole different sense.

I remember tonight watching the closing ceremony when they extinguished the flame, looking at the 70,000 people all cheering and proudly holding that twinking light, thinking to myself.. “so the world can actually be united under one roof with-out terror attacks, bomb threats, hate crimes, sexual discrimination, domestic violence, rape, desecration, sacrilage,………. e.t. freaking c.” I also started to think that it was interesting that for the past two weeks, it seems there’s been a little less hate in the world and a lot more pride for the things that count. I guess when it all comes down to it, we need to be thankful for those of us like these medal-deserving athletes that know how to work for what they want, dedicate themselves to what they believe in and have a goal and accomplish it. Tonight, these are our heros and im damn proud to be American.
